Topper, Wig or Hair Extensions: Which Do You Need?
Topper, wig or extensions: which do you actually need? It's one of the most common questions we're asked, and the honest answer depends on where you're losing hair, how much, and what you want day to day. Here's how to tell.
Start with where your hair is thinning
| Your situation | Usually best |
|---|---|
| Healthy hair, you want more length or volume | Weft extensions or clip-ins |
| Thinning at the part, crown or top of the head | A topper |
| Widespread thinning or full hair loss | A wig |
| Men's thinning or a receding hairline | A men's hair system or topper |
| A sensitive scalp, such as psoriasis | Something removable. See our psoriasis guide |
Hair extensions
Extensions add length and volume by attaching hair to your own. They need enough healthy hair to hold them, so they're best when your hair is full but you want more of it. Wefts are long-wearing; clip-ins come out whenever you like.
Hair toppers
A topper covers a specific area, usually the part line, crown or top of the head, and your own hair blends through it. If you've noticed your part widening or your scalp showing through on top, this is usually where to start.
Wigs
A wig gives full coverage. It suits more widespread thinning or complete hair loss, and a well-made wig with a natural part and hairline is the most seamless option when there isn't enough hair left to blend a topper into.
The hair matters as much as the choice
Whichever you choose, what it's made from decides how natural it looks and how long it lasts. Everything we make is single-donor virgin hair that moves and ages like your own. Virgin vs Remy hair explained.

Topper, wig or extensions — frequently asked questions
Should I get a topper or extensions for thin hair?
If your hair is thin all over but still fairly full, extensions can add volume. If the thinning is concentrated at the part, crown or top of the head, a topper usually gives a more natural result because it covers that area directly.
When is a wig better than a topper?
When the hair loss is widespread or complete, and there isn't enough of your own hair left for a topper to blend into.
Can I get advice before deciding?
Yes. Book a private consultation, in the Henley Beach studio or online, and we'll recommend what suits your hair and lifestyle.
